What is a Reading List?

After adding a course, add a reading list for the course. A course can have more than one reading list, but the usual situation at Knox is to have one reading list per course.

A reading list is blank until you add citations to it. A typical reading list can include: physical books, book chapters, online journal articles, photocopied material, or instructor-owned copies.

Create a Reading List:

Each course will have its own reading list. For courses with the same course number but with different instructors, follow the instructions above for creating the different courses. Then create a reading list for each course, but put the initials of the instructor in the Reading List code and name the name of the instructor in the Reading list name. Examples:

1. Go to: Fulfillment > Course Reserves > Courses.

2. Find the course for which you want to create a reading list. Click the row actions button to the right of the course, and select "Reading List".

3. Click "Add Reading List". The Add Reading List creation box opens. Fill in the fields:

Code: Use the code for the course. Example: HIST 110
Name: Use the course code and course name Example HIST 110: Early American History
Status: Choose "Being Prepared" for a new reading list.
Due Back Date: This will default to the course's end date. Usually leave as is. Note: For courses and reading lists for Winter Term always make the Due Back Date = the day after the last day of finals.

Click Add and Close when done.

Reading Lists for Cross-listed Courses

For courses that are cross-listed in multiple departments the same reading list can be shared between courses. First, make sure all courses have been created. Then:

1. Create the reading list for one course in the home department for the faculty teaching the course. For example, for the cross-listed course ART 119 / JOUR 119, create the reading list under the ART 119 course because the instructor teaching the course is from the ART department.

2. After creating the reading list, find the reading list and click on the row actions list to "work on" the reading list.

3. Click on the Courses tab. Then click on the "Associate Course" link. Look up the second course that you want to associate with the first course for which you created the reading list and add it.

The reading list is now associated with both courses.
